This took up a fair amount of my time recently… This video was done by our friends in Epik Films and Bulls and Arrows – enjoy
Ok. So. This ISNT a review of Brooke Fraser… rather a chance to draw your attention to the apparently amazing taste in music that she herself has… I recently made an offer for Brooke to be a part of a Festival here during March next year and was trolling her website for info… I found this and it made me smile… Brooke you should be commended, if for nothing else, your incredible taste in music… thankyou
I re-discovered these guys yesterday… All thanks to the greatest invention in musical history… the ‘shuffle’ function
. I first heard about them through a friend Matt who lives and surfs around The Shire in NSW… I trust his style unquestionably – and even though I havent spent a lot of time with him the time I have spent has unearthed some great stuff… The first song I ever heard was called ‘Love Love Love Love Love’ off their self titled 2006 release – and the best part is – it’s not even the best track on the album… not even close…
Their music is generally everything I like about music… First up it isn’t produced to be perfect, It certainly has a raw and real tone to it – at the end of ‘Love’ they have even included the voices of children (presumably their own) talking and laughing and fighting as all kids do… It’s passionate – A lot of music today is bland and monotone – As Tall As Lions build with every song - giving you a musical climax that makes you want to listen to each track right to the end… The lyrics are honest and searching – which I think is the most powerful way to write – and as a human I appreciate knowing I’m not the only one who still has questions…
My biggest regret is now forgetting how good these guys are – when my iPod gifted me a track by them yesterday I recommitted my affections for them and am going to order their new album this week
… Im goona try add a videoto my blog – This track (if it works – hahaha) is called Stab City and is the title track off their Self titled album… enjoy
I’ve worked in and out of the music industry in different capacities over the last few years… I definitely enjoy music… almost everything about it in fact… The sound, the rhythm, the expression, the passion, the questions and the answers, the honesty, the indulgence… It always helpful for me to journey anything, positive or negative, with the assistance of music… Having worked with a heap of bands from all over the world I often get asked by parents and by young people ‘what should I be listening to?’
Let me first off say that not everything I listen to is Christian or even by Christians… BUT I do think standards are important… My philosophy is that you are what you eat – if you are constantly digesting stuff that is negative you will produce fruit that is negative… simple equation – hahaha. For me a christian message definitely appeals… obviously. But perhaps the music that I appreciate the most is the stuff that still has a lot of questions unanswered… It’s honest… and it kind of makes me feel like it’s okay that im not there yet either… I like to hear the process of people actually discovering God… as they are discovering him… because honestly, that is where we are – everyday – always discovering something new about God, about ourselves and about Life…
I will definitely endeavour to review a HEAP of different bands on this blog – some of them will personally be my friends.. others will just feel like they are because of how their music speaks to me… It makes sense though that I start with the band I’m off to see in a few hours: Switchfoot.
I have been lucky enough to have seen and met this band on a number of occasions… Originating from Sandiego California this group of guys have produced a bunch of amazing records… I definitely like their music – honestly, I REALLY like it – I never seem to grow weary of Jon’s voice, however many times I hear it… I definitely like their heart… For God, for community, for the church, for the broken – These guys have never hesitated to respond to a cause where they can and I appreciate that. But it’s definitely their honesty that I like the most. I remember watching a documentary about the band a few years ago and Jon was talking about their album ‘The Beautiful Letdown’ – the significance of the name, of the whole journey that the album took you on was that it is actually the wrestle between the beautiful and the chaotic that makes life so special… that makes grace so special… The thought that without first the need to redeem there would never be a need for the redeemer… I like that…
Do yourselves a favour – if you can go see them, do… if you can’t, buy their record… or all of them – hahaha…
Much love,
Adam
p.s. definitely learnt how to add pictures
… this is one of my favoruite ones because Jon is wearing the Tshirt of another favourite band of mine… hahah nerd much?
